Text message voodoo

Indonesian cellphone users are increasingly worried (if not annoyed) with the new trend in junk text message: a message saying you have been voodooed.
Although it is just another form of junk message, some logic-deficient users are increasingly worried.

Cellphone operators are being accused as well: distributing such messages to increase traffic. Banking on people who pass the message to each other. Something that operators strongly denied.

Jakarta flood: The president is soaked

It's that time of the year again.
Rain, flood, oh what a surprise.

At least this time not only the little people who suffer: The president's entourage was caught in the flood around central Jakarta. The president had to change car and got his shoes soaked in the process. [1].

Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta governor, said he was not surprised that Jakarta is flooded (yet again).
"It was already predicted by the meteorology agency (BMG), so we are prepared". Said the governor. [2]

It was not clear whether the president was also prepared (to get soaked).

Getting a driver's license will not be so easy

Getting a driver's license will not be so easy. The Jakarta police is putting an effort to eliminate bribing in obtaining driver's license. Or so says Kompol Gatot Subroto, the chief of drivers license section, the Jakarta police. [1]

This step, he said is to "ensure the individuals holding the license have the ability to drive, and understand the traffic regulations."

Getting driver's license in Indonesia is notoriously difficult, not because the exam is hard, but allegedly it is made difficult so the examiners can get kickbacks from bribes.

It is no wonder that his statement is received with great cynicism.

New face of Kompas.com

Not being a regular visitor of Kompas, it was a nice surprise to see the new face of Kompas.com.
The well-designed, blog-like format is a leap forward compared to its previous looks.
It almost looks like the New York Times, only better.

It is surely better to your eyes than the ad-cluttered detik.com.

Gus Dur: "I am Chinese"

Indonesia's former president Abdurahman Wahid (Gus Dur) said that he is actually chinese, in a recent talk show in Jakarta.

"I am chinese with a mix of Arabian and Indian. My ancestors are chinese". [1]

Gus Dur claimed that he is a descendant of the Princess of Campa, one of the wives of the king of Majapahit, Brawijaya V.
(This website shows photos of the cemetery where the princess was buried, in East Java).

The reason why he is saying this is unclear, but Gus Dur is known by Indonesians for his pointless rants.
